Chapter VI

Just like daydreamingJust like daydreaming

Chapter six

Perhaps it wasn’t realistic and truth-be-told I was just a hopeless romantic. But having the power of blocking out the sun with one finger was great. Yes, I was in my own little bubble, my never-ending Jason Mraz love song, my perfect fairytale. Maybe I forgot about that saying “the higher you fly, the bigger the fall” or maybe I was in that urge of finding out how the rest of my life was going to look like and who was going to be in it, you know, that urge we all get when we hit our 20s.

He stopped kissing me and said “I’m glad you didn’t slap me”, we laughed.

I had been involuntarily thinking about that moment for so long that it felt just like daydreaming. That’s the moment when I let go, my fear was for him not to feel the same way and he did, so I let go and changed my daydreams for the reality before me.

He dropped me home that night and gave me a kiss on the cheek before saying goodbye. When I woke up the next morning I couldn’t believe what had happened.

Mei, Tania, Hasan, Ahmed (Hasan’s friend) and I were planning on going to the Fright Fest at Six Flags in Jersey together, we had gone the last two years and it had become a tradition for us. We were going to carpool on Ahmed’s car because he was the only one of us with a car. We were still talking about our plans for that day when Gael came over, he hugged me from behind which surprised everyone because I hadn’t yet told them about us.

“Do you guys mind if I join you?” he asked politely.

“Sure, we were talking about the Fright Fest in Jersey, you should come!”

“I’m not sure if we can all fit in my car…” said Ahmed.

“I’ve heard about it, I can take my car, if anything I can drive some of you”

“Oh my Gosh, yes!” Mei said with her high-pitched voice.

Gael grabbed a chair and sat next to me, he put his arm around my shoulders as the rest continued talking.

“I didn’t know you guys were a thing now…” Hasan said with a strong and serious tone.

“She’s absolutely beautiful, I don’t know what took me so long”, Gael’s eyes fixed on me. Hasan whispered something to himself but I couldn’t hear anything, none of us did.

“I’m sorry, what?” asked Gael.

“Since when?” Hasan replied.

“A few nights ago, after ballroom dancing”

“Oh I see…” that’s all Hasan said. From the corner of my eye I saw Ahmed looked at him without saying a word.

“I’m so happy for you guys!” said Tania.

“This is like so exciting!” said Mei.

Hasan didn’t say a word after that, he just stood quiet and after a few minutes he stood up saying that he needed to leave because he had practice.

“What do you play?” asked Gael.

“It’s this game…” I said.

“It’s not a game, it’s a sport” replied Hasan.

“Sure… anyways… have you seen Harry Potter?” I continued.

“You’re part of the Quidditch team?” Gael asked excited. “So am I!”

“Oh! I knew you seemed familiar!” said Hasan.

“That’s great, practice doesn’t start in another two hours tho”

“Yeah ummm… but I gotta do something first, I’ll catch up with you guys later, bye Amélie”, Hasan turned around and walked away, he came back after a few seconds. He told me one of the honor societies he was part of was having a gala and asked me to go with him and I said I would go as I always had.

Meanwhile, my love story continued. In one of our dates we walked by a flowers stand, the seller had yellow roses, my favorite ones, I told Gael and he got me one. After that one date since he knew I loved yellow roses, he would give me one rose and one coconut chocolate every time we went out. The coconut chocolate was because he loved them, he told me that when he was little whenever his dad brought his mom chocolates, he would always take the one coconut chocolate. I didn’t like them that much, but that was such a sweet gesture that I would always pretend to love them. I remember how my apartment used to be full of yellow roses, and I would always have coconut chocolates on my fridge. And whenever we ran into one of his friends I loved how he introduced me as his girlfriend. We spent so much time together and the best part was that we never ran out of things to say and we laughed so much when we were together, it was all so nice!

Gael’s birthday was coming up and I was planning on doing something special, I was so focused on his birthday that I completely forgot about Hasan’s gala. Unfortunately the gala ended up being the same day as Gael’s birthday and I had to cancel on Hasan just days before. Hasan never invited me as his plus one again, he took another of his friends instead, I understood completely. I thought he felt like I was replacing my best friend with my new boyfriend, and maybe I was, a little.
